Read this Russian poem in the original on Самовар — free, no account needed, with Alexander Condie Stephen’s English translation beside the text, and an audiobook to listen along to.
English by Alexander Condie Stephen (1875), public domain. Swipe right on the text to read it beside the Russian, or tap the EN button on the right. Verse, paired section by section: each English passage sits beside the numbered section it renders. Stephen folds the Russian section XIV of Part II into XIII, and his text is scanned from the 1875 printing, so an occasional scanning slip survives. A literary translation is not a crib: the English follows the sense and the tone rather than the words, so a line here will rarely answer the Russian beside it one for one.
Печальный Демон, дух изгнанья,
Летал над грешною землёй,
И лучших дней воспоминанья
Пред ним теснилися толпой;
Тех дней, когда в жилище света
Блистал он, чистый херувим,
Самовар — the whole library / вся библиотека
